space maintainers

Band and Loop Appliance
A “band and loop.”  is used to hold the space where a tooth was removed earlier than its normal time.  This insures there is enough room for the permanent tooth to come into its proper position.  This appliance stays in place until the permanent tooth is ready to come into the space reserved for it.

If the appliance becomes loose or comes out, call the dental clinic as soon as possible.  If the appliance does come out, please bring it with you to the appointment.

Sticky food, candy, and chewing gum will stick to the appliance.  Therefore, we advise that your child avoid these items. We also encourage your child to continue their excellent oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily.

Bluegrass Appliance
The “Bluegrass appliance.”  is designed to help your child stop the thumb sucking habit by making it impossible to get their thumb in the position that is necessary to continue the habit.  It also serves as a reminder should they put their thumb in their mouth without thinking or during sleep.  Your child is instructed to turn the Teflon roller which replaces the desire to suck the thumb.

This appliance will be kept in your child’s mouth until the habit is broken and will not start back, usually 6-9 months.
If the appliance comes loose or comes out, call the dental clinic as soon as possible.  If the appliance does come out, please bring it with you to the appointment.

Sticky food, candy, and chewing gum will stick to the appliance.  Therefore, we advise your child to avoid these items.
